The first of our winter flights articles looks at flight options to get to the Fethiye, Marmaris, Kalkan and Kas areas of Turkey from London and the south.
Direct charter flights to Dalaman Airport stop between November and March with the exception of the Christmas period. So how do you get to your family, friends or holiday property during that time?
Contrary to popular belief Dalaman airport is open to international flights during the winter it’s just that flight operators don’t fly in.
However, the Christmas period does see a single operator Thomas Cook fly in over a three week period.
For Christmas 2013 Thomas Cook will fly direct from London Gatwick to Dalaman departing at 14:25 and arriving at Dalaman at 20:30 on:
- Sunday 22/12/2013
- Sunday 29/12/2013
- Sunday 05/01/2014
Return flights on the same dates depart 21:30 arriving London at 23:55
Antalya is better served by direct flights than Dalaman and its relative closeness means a transfer between the two is workable if not tiring. It’s a 3 and half hour bus ride from Antalya bus station to Fethiye once you make the journey across the city or a 3 hour drive in a car.
See our article here about how to make the bus transfer from Antalya airport to Fethiye.
Antalya has a weekly flight from London Gatwick every Sunday departing 12:10 and arriving Antalya at 18:20 from 22 December 2013 until 11th February 2014 when a second flight is added every Tuesday. That second flight departs at 8:25 arriving Antalya at 14:45.
Flights then increase to three a week with another flight added every Friday from 21st March 2014 departing 07:15 and arriving Antalya at 13:15.
Dalaman airport is a busy airport for internal flights.
Operators fly between the airport and Istanbul Ataturk Airport, Sabiha Airport on the Asian side and Ankara to name a few.
So fly to Istanbul and from there you can then pick up an internal flight to Dalaman.
However, keep an eye out when you are booking and understand that the transfer time between the two airports for the 43 mile (70km) trip is around an hour and a half and sometimes even more depending on traffic.
Pegasus Airlines operates two daily flights between London Stanstead and Istanbul Sabiha. From there you can fly to Dalaman on a Pegasus domestic flight from the same airport.
The shortest journey time is 6h 25 minutes for both flights but you will need to allow checking in time etc departing London at 12:55 arriving Dalaman at 21:20.
If you don’t mind an overnight trip you can also take the 6 hour 25 minute ‘red-eye’ flight leaving London at 23:35 arriving Istanbul Sabiha at 05:25. After a 1 hour 10 minute wait you then catch the 06:25 flight arriving at Dalaman at 7:40 in time for breakfast.
Prices in November range from £105 to £156 one way and in January from £106 to £116.
Return flights on the same route provide two choices both leaving at 8:05 from Dalaman via Istanbul arriving London Stanstead at either 12:15 or 22:55.
