The first thing you see in Ani are the city walls – and they are breathtaking.
 
If you looked at the triangular shape of the city in the map in the previous Ani episode you would see the two slanting sides of the triangle are protected by gorges – with the top, flat edge being protected by the tufa walls shown above.

{mosimage}Originally there were seven gates into the city but the best preserved is shown above, called the Lion Gate and used as the main entrance today.
 
Inside there are twelve large ruined structures including churches, a cathedral, monastery, a mosque, a caravanseray, a castle and recently excavated remains of ordinary shops and houses.
