There are some super day trips from Fethiye and this one sees us visiting Sovalye Island, Fethiye’s nearest inhabited island which is just a short boat ride away from Fethiye town centre.
Day Trip from Fethiye – Sovalye Island
Sovalye Island, pronounced ‘Chevalier’, is a small inhabited island just a short boat ride away from Fethiye town.
With no roads there are no cars, scooter and trucks on the island which makes it a wonderfully peaceful place to spend a day.
The only sounds will be those of the afternoon sea breeze rustling through the shrubs, birdsong and the occasional human voice.
Peaceful is the word, and with just 80 properties on the island, including some boutique hotels, it isn’t overrun by crowds of people either.
Sovalye Island A Very, Very Brief History
The island is named after the Knights of St John who travelled over from the nearby island of Rhodes and used the island and also Fethiye as one of their defensive positions. In fact the remains of their defences can still be found.
If you want to know more about the history of the Knights of St John check out this Fethiye Guide from the Turkish Kultur website.
In the season, a regular water taxi operates. Outside of the regular service, you can charter with the boatman to take your party over privately. The boat from Fethiye lands visitors to a small jetty. From there what you do is up to you but here are some ideas:
Go for a Walk
It takes about 45 minutes to walk around the island or longer if you stop to marvel at some of the cool pads with fantastic views and their own moorings; the stuff dreams are made of.
Beach comb along the rocky foreshore and pick up shells.
Lounge on the beach and take a dip in the sea to cool off.
Or dangle your feet in the warm sea off the small harbour.
Relax, Eat and Drink
Stop for a bite to eat or drink at the restaurant. The terrace bar is a cool place to be in the shade of the mature trees. Or move up to the roof for a panoramic view of Fethiye bay, Red island and Calis.
Enjoy a long leisurely and unhurried lunch.
Be artistic and sketch or take pictures of the wonderful buildings and gardens. Share them on your Facebook page or Twitter.
Keep in Touch
While having a drink or a spot of lunch, you could also catch up on your emails and keep in touch via the restaurant wifi link…now you really can tele work or just make your colleagues jealous!
If you fancy a sunset or evening trip the restaurant operates a complimentary customer boat service from Calis – see below.
How to Get to Sovalye Island
From June until September take the regular water taxi service from the harbour near the Fethiye Bey Statue and Paspatur old town where the turtles feed near the small fishing boats. If you can’t find it just ask a local for the Sovalye Island boat.
There is a small charge – see the fares posted on the harbour side sign.
Shoulder season you can charter the boat from the skipper.
Journey time – 20 – 25 minutes
Contact the Ada restaurant (0533 1387050) to catch their complimentary boat service which operates from the Sat peninsula to the island regularly.
Journey time – 10 minutes.
