Visitors to and residents of the popular holiday resorts of Fethiye, Calis and Oludeniz now have a very British sporting activity they can take part in; Crown Green Bowling.

Every Thursday from 2pm visitors are welcome to turn up at the purpose built crown green bowling green in Calis, Fethiye and play.

The wonderful setting with the back drop of mountains and the shade of the nearby Gunluk trees makes this probably one of the best crown green bowling rinks around anywhere.

In fact, to our knowledge, this green is unique as it is the only crown green bowling rink in Turkey. So there’s a reason to visit.

Don’t worry if you haven’t bowled before as help and tuition are always on hand.

Turn Up And Bowl

We turned up recently to find out what the game was all about and were soon on the green bowling to get the woods as close to the ‘jack’ as possible.

Our helpful coaches Mel and Rosemary gave us the low down on the techniques, told us the difference between ‘thumb’ and ‘finger’, how to bowl to take account of the undulations on the green and that to ‘go gardening’ meant the wood had left the green!

As the afternoon progressed we certainly started to get the hang of this gentle sport and even managed to win a few points although that was more by luck than skill.

We had a lovely afternoon and will certainly call by on again on a Thursday from 2pm to bowl at the Calis Crown Green Bowling Green.
