We’ve already written about the amazing sights to be seen in the old city of Damascus but here are a few more images.

As we’ve said it is a mix of Roman, Arab and Ottoman structures and sometimes bits of one of these cultures pop up in the most unexpected places.

Look at the Roman columns, once part of one of the entrances to the Temple of Jupiter, now lying between a street of shops and the square in front of the Ummayad Mosque.

At the back of the Msoque there are the graves of three Turkish pilots shot down at the beginning of the First World War and one of them is Fethi Bey after whom Fethiye is named.

And the city has a thriving Christian community so you see priests on the street and belfries peep over the roof tops.

Damascus is certainly an endlessly fascinating city.
