Syria – a small eco initiative

Syria has the worst record in the Middle East in terms of environmental issues but there is a small initiative which is the first tangible project of the Syrian Environment Association (SEA).

Syrian Environment Association (SEA) Damascus

Here in Fethiye we complain, quite rightly, about the litter on the roadsides and rubbish overflowing from bins.

Fethiye seems pristine compared to Syria. However, in Damascus, right next door to the Citadel, there is a small initiative which is the first tangible project of the Syrian Environment Association (SEA).

Opened in 2006 it is officially called the ‘Ecological and Biological Garden’ and aims to show plants native to the area and, as you can see, there is also a cafe where SEA hold meetings and seminars as well as serving delicious meals and snacks.

It is a haven of peace in the midst of the hurly burly of old Damascus and at night looks especially welcoming.

Dare we suggest a similar venue would be very welcome in Fethiye?
