On our recent visit to the ancient site of Sagalassos near Burdur we were amazed to find two people carving intricate stone work as part of the site reconstruction.

The reconstruction of the Upper Agora, a project for which generous funding has been found, has allowed the employment of two stone carvers to recreate missing pieces from marble capitals/bas reliefs, etc.

They use small drills to cut out the complicated designs that they have drawn using pencils on the stone.

The picture above shows a young female carver at work etching the complicated designs with a small drill along a design that she drew on with pencil.

The picture right shows the other carver surveying his work repairing an original but broken carving.  The original is the darker marble and the new white piece which is being carved to match.

Watching the pair work on this ancient site was a real treat but did make us wonder at the skills and patience the original artists must have had working with the less efficient tools of their time.

From Fethiye drive towards Antalya.

At Korkuteli follow the signs for Bucak.

After Bucak follow the road to Burdur but take the turn off to Aglasan.

Sagalsssos is signed from this town.

The entrance fee in summer 2009 was 5TL and the guide was free.
