With the sea temperature at 28C (82F) now’s a great time to enjoy the sea all around Fethiye.

Sea temperatures in and around Fethiye reach their peak in September as they have been warmed by the hot Mediterranean sun all summer. The sea temperature is now just hitting its peak of around 28 C. With temperatures like this there’s no ‘oh…brrrrr’ when you get in the sea just an ‘ohhh…ahhhhh’.

We recently took a trip out to the wonderful island of Sovalye in the bay of Fethiye, just off the Shat point of Calis, where the water is clean, clear and calm. The beach is much less crowded than other local locations. The many olive trees offer welcome shade from the hot sun and there’s water, toilets and BBQ spots for those who like to picnic. It's a bit pebbly though so always wear sandals to protect your feet.

This spot is also great for snorkeling and when we went exploring we saw clams, sea urchins, sea bream, wrasse and even a big ray complete with a blue feeder fish waft below us. There are also some ancient sunken ruins to the North of the Island, just down from where the water dolmus drops you off, to explore which are very interesting.

You can get to Sovalye Island every day during the summer by taking the water dolmus from the centre of Fethiye (near to the central fountain) for 3 YTL per person each way. The first boat leaves at 8:00am and the last returns around 7:00pm (check times with the boat captain). The journey takes around half an hour each way.
