Fishing - Species

Sea fishing will offer a huge range of fish from either shore or boat. Local anglers use nets, spear and rods. There are 600 fish species in the Mediterranean Sea. The most common varieties appear on the fishmonger’s slab:

Red Mullet, Sole, Sea Bass, Blue Fish, Red Coral Fish, Tuna, Bonito, Anchovy, Grey Mullet, Lobster, Mackerel, Plaice, Sardine, Swordfish, Turbot, and Sea Trout.

While the land based angler can look for Trout, Perch, Carp, and a whole range of coarse fish to be caught with net or rod.

Most of these can be seen displayed for sale in the local fish market.

Not everything in the sea is friendly and Fethiye Times has listed some of the hazardous sea life that, hopefully you will not meet:

• Weever Fish,

• Scorpion Fish,

• Blue Mouth,

• Stingray,

• Moray Eel,

• Barracuda,

• Puffer Fish,

• Sharks,

• Jelly Fish and

• Sea Snakes.

Weever fish have sharp poisonous spikes in their dorsal fins and habitually bury themselves in the sand where they may be stood on by unsuspecting bathers.

Bites or stings from any sea creature should be referred to local medical services if side effects start to develop.

There are approximately 46 different species of sharks in the Mediterranean - 16 of them measuring over three meters in length, and 15 being potentially dangerous species. Inevitably the occasional encounter between humans and sharks is unavoidable. The good news is that shark attacks in Turkish waters are very rare.

The main risk for land-based anglers is from snakes and stinging insects such as the Hornet.

Don’t worry; the average angler will encounter nothing more irritating than mosquito bites and ants in the sandwich box.
