The Sultans - Ahmet II (1691 – 95)

Ahmet was forty-eight years old when he became sultan and, as with his predecessor, had been denied concubines whilst in the Cage.  However, unlike his older brother, as soon as he was released he chose at least two women for his harem.  One of them gave birth to twin boys in July 1692, the first twins to be born in the Ottoman dynasty.  Unfortunately one of the boys died a year later and, whilst the other lived on until 1714, he never became sultan.  Ahmet’s brief reign was uneventful and he died on 6 February 1695 of natural causes in Edirne having ruled for a little over three and a half years.  He was buried in the Sülemaniye next to his brother.

Prince Mustafa, son of Mehmet IV, was now enthroned as Sultan Mustafa II.
