The Sultans - Abdül Hamit I (1774 – 89)

Abdül Hamit was almost forty-nine when he became sultan having spent the previous forty-three years in the Cage.  During that time it is recorded that he fathered a daughter and, in total, he went on to father twenty-six children, thirteen of each gender, of whom only two sons and three daughters survived to adulthood.  Both of his sons would eventually reign as sultans.

War against Russia was finally declared in 1787 and by the end of the following year the Turks were defeated.  Abdül Hamit died of a stroke some four months later at the age of sixty-four, the longest-lived sultan since Süleyman the Magnificent.  He was succeeded by his nephew Selim III.
