What do you do when you learn that there will be a supermoon for the first time in 68 years? It’s obvious – you head outside to see what all the fuss is about. It was therefore not surprising that on Monday night, as darkness fell, groups of enthusiastic photographers began to congregate at various vantage points in and around Fethiye, weighed down with cameras, bags of equipment and tripods.

What was in store?

There’s an ever present problem when it comes to shooting moonrise in Fethiye – the mountainous landscape. It is also the one that makes the region so beautiful. Also, on on Monday, for the whole afternoon there had been high wispy clouds; these slightly masked the area where the majestic moon would rise behind the rugged backdrop of the town but again it added to the drama, of course.

Undaunted, our photographers checked their camera settings, settled their tripods, and waited…

Hello supermoon!

Finally, the supermoon appeared – one that as the night continued would become the closest, brightest, full moon since 1948. There was cloud cover but every now and again, the glorious moon appeared … and these are the results of an hour spent moon gazing.

It is clear to see that the cloud cover was rather significant to begin with but…

By the time the moon could be seen in Kayaköy, there was a break in the clouds and these remarkable photos were taken.
