The natural beauty and wonderful landscape of Cappadocia can be enoyed in the bright sunshine as well as one of those rare overcast summer days as we found out on a recent visit to one of the wonders of Turkey.
Unbelievably we arrived in Göreme on 2nd July to find it overcast and cool, a mere 21 degrees in the middle of the day.
Everyone we had spoken to about going, told us it would be incredibly hot – they were wrong.
And of course a balloon flight was planned for the first of two mornings we would spend there.
We woke at 4am, as you have to do to take a balloon flight in summer, but after spending two hours drinking tea and eating cakes and biscuits in the balloon company’s office, we were taken back to our hotel and told to be ready for another attempt the next day.
The winds were too high for balloon flights to be safe.
That gave us all day to acquire warm clothing, and the Kipa in Nevşehir is highly recommended.
Many people literally fly into Cappadocia to take the hot air balloon flight, and only stay one night.
So if the ballon flights are cancelled one day, there are twice as many balloons as usual ascending the next.
And this is exactly what happened.
