Text message for earthquakes

AVEA’s Mobile phone network is to carry ‘real-time’ earthquake data from  locations in Istanbul.

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Erdik who is Head of Bosphorus University’s Observatory in Kandilli and Head of the Earthquake Engineering department of the Earthquake Research Institute, has confirmed that special stations have now been placed in 100 residential, industrial and business areas around the city as part of the

“The Istanbul Earthquake Emergency Intervention System” (IEEIS).  In the event of an earthquake IEEIS will create a map of the earthquake and the distribution of damage to the city in five minutes.

Mr.Veli Murat ƥlik, Information Processing Services and Project Planning Director for AVEA mobile telephone network, stated that special GSM modules had also been installed in the earthquake recording equipment, sending information in the form of short text messages to the AVEA network, where it would be processed and forwarded to the Kandilli Observatory.
