Shakespeare’s ‘Frugal’ Fethiye

We do hope you are all agog wondering what on earth can be the connection between Shakespeare and our ‘Frugal Fethiye’ series. Well it’s simple. He invented the word ‘frugal’.

In fact in total Shakespeare coined, or made the first recorded use of some 2,035 words including: abstemious, critical, dwindle, extract, horrid, vast, hereditary, excellent, barefaced, assassination, lonely, leapfrog, countless and, as we were delighted to discover, frugal.

And what a great word it is; especially as it is illiterative with Fethiye.

So what words of wisdom might the Bard offer us in our efforts to be frugal the twentyfirst century Turkey?

"Neither a borrower nor a lender be; for loan doth oft lose both itself and friend, and borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry."

Polonius, Hamlet, Act I, Scene ii

Wise words indeed.
