One of the perceived benefits of shopping in supermarkets rather than smaller shops is that the price of products are marked. But, as we have recently found, the displayed price can often be different when you get to the check-out.

One of the perceived benefits of shopping in the national chain supermarkets rather than smaller local shops is that prices are marked. But when you’ve bought a trolley full of shopping remembering the price displayed and the price at the checkout is something for a memory expert not a harassed shopper.

However, in the last two weeks, and on two separate occasions, we have found differences between the prices marked on the shelf and the price on our receipt at the check-out at the main Migros store in Fethiye.

The first offending item was a non stick baking tray that was marked as 5 YTL on the shelf. However, when we went through the check-out up came a price of 12 YTL on the till receipt.

The second was a tub of frozen prawns marked at 10.45 YTL. It came up on the till receipt at 17.35 YTL!

Luckily we spotted the mistakes on both occasions and obtained a full cash refund and an apology at the information desk.

It does make you wonder though how many other mistakes are made even by the modern, hi-tech supermarkets and that it pays to check your till receipts.
