People on the money – 200TL

Yunus Emre (1238 – 1320) features on this note along with a drawing of his tomb.

He was a Turkish poet, one of the first to write in the spoken Turkish of his day rather than Persian or Arabic which were the official languages of communication at the time, just as Latin was in England.

His poems are usually about divine love or human destiny and he is still admired from Azerbaijan to the Balkans.

There are seven ‘alleged’ sites of his tomb which makes you wonder which of those is depicted on the 200TL note.

Here’s a verse written by Emre:

Yunus Emre is my name,
Each passing day fans and rouses my flame,
What I desire in both worlds is the same:
You’re the one I need, you’re the one I crave.
