This is the note that really set the tongues wagging when plans were first announced to put a woman, Fatma Aliye (1862-1936) on one of the new banknotes.

She was the first Turkish female novelist and also a philosopher.

Many people were angry that she had been chosen instead of Halide Edip, a more famous female writer in Turkey who was also a close friend of Atatürk during the turbulent years between the end of the First World War and the foundation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923. 

And, of course, some people were angry that a woman, any woman, was to appear on a bank note.
