People on the money – 5TL

And finally the five lira note features another academic Prof. Dr. Aydın Sayılı whose subject was the history of science.

He was lucky enough to meet Atatürk who arranged for him to have a state-funded scholarship to go and study at Harvard.

In the end he gained his Ph.D. from Harvard, the first one they awarded in history of science.

After a few more years post-doctoral work at various other US universities he returned to Turkey where he taught at various universities and established the history of science within the academic disciplines of this country.

He was particularly interested in the history of astronomy and in 1960 published ‘The Observatory in Islam’ which was later translated into many languages and reaffirmed the role of Turkish and Arab astronomers in medieval times.

In total he published 140 works, from slight pamphlets to full-sized books, and received awards from Poland and UNESCO as well as all possible Turkish academic medals.
