The 10 lira note features Prof. Dr. Cahit  Arf (1910-1997) a famous Turkish mathematician.

We may not have many mathematicians amongst our readership but, in case there are some out there who can understand the following, here we go:

“He is known for the Arf invariant of a quadratic form in characteristic 2 (applied in knot theory and surgery theory) in topology, the Hasse-Arf theorem and Arf rings.”

So now you know.

As well as a distinguished academic career at several of the best Turkish universities he also taught for two years at Princeton and one at Berkeley in California.

He died in Istanbul aged 87 and is the most famous Turkish mathematician of the 20th century.

He is buried beside Beyazit Mosque in Istanbul, appropriately close to the University where his career started.
