Marriage in Turkey for UK Citizens

Last year we covered the legal process to follow if a foreigner marries a Turkish person. Now, thanks to one of our contributors, we can let you know where to find the details of how to get married in Turkey if you live elsewhere.

As with all processes in Turkey this one is inconvenient and complex and we wonder how many people would actually be bothered with it. This is a disappointment as not only could this be a new area of Tourism for Turkey but it’s also an idyllic place to tie the knot.

The British Honorary Consulate in Fethiye is not authorised to deal with marriage formalities so you will need to apply to either the British Consulate in Izmir or British Vice Consulate in Antalya. The documents at the link below are required by the register office in Fethiye for foreigner's marriage.

When you bring the necessary documents, you should apply to the nearest consulates (as listed on the site) to initiate the marriage formalities.

The registrar in Fethiye does not speak English so you will need an interpreter provided either by you, your tour operator or the registrar.

Legalization of the required document can be completed at the consulate offices but make sure you have booked an appointment in advance to be sure. The rest entirely depends on the workload of the local registrar which is usually at a peak in the weeks running up to Ramazan – 24 September this year.
