The village wing has now been resident in Yanıklar for five years, and each winter has taught free English classes in the village, mainly attended by children from the village school.

However, this year was the first time we had been to watch the Children’s Day celebrations in the schoolyard.

This is folk dancing on a budget with basic costumes the property of the school and used by generations of children – and somehow the designer trainers don’t quite match.

But their hearts were definitely in the right place and, as one proud Mum said to me “It’s been worth all the rehearsing”.

Even the youngest had a go.

And if they seem a bit uncertain as to whether they should be kneeling or standing up – what the hell. 

Performing like this is a great route to boosting children’s self confidence and the majority of the Mums and Grandmas in the village turned out to watch and applaud.

And of course one group did the local ‘Fethiye Dance’ and performed it very well.

Remember every 23rd April is Children’s Day and you will be very welcome at your local school to watch the celebrations – or you can go to the big display in the stadium in Fethiye.
