A 5.1 earthquake hit the town of Cameli near Denizli yesterday at 11:23 and was felt in Fethiye.

A 5.1 earthquake hit the town of Cameli near Denizli yesterday at 11:23 local time. The quake, measuring 5.1, was detected at only 5km below the earth’s surface and caused some damage to buildings in the nearby village of Elmali and brought rocks tumbling down onto the Fethiye – Denizli mountain road.  The area of Cameli sits on a dozen or more known fault lines many of which are relatively close to the earth’s surface. A further after shock of 3.0 occurred 2 hours later.

The quake was felt in Gocek, Fethiye and surrounding areas. Local residents were seen to flee Fethiye in cars after the quake with many not returning to their homes until the early evening.
