The problem with seeds …………

One of the most frequently discussed topics at Fethiye Times’ Gardening Club meetings is the low germination rate of seeds brought out from the UK.  Various theories have been aired as to why the rates are so poor, but no-one ever suggested that maybe the fault lies in the seeds themselves.  Well in its October issue ‘Gardening Which’ published the results of tests on seeds from all the well-known suppliers, and found as many as 99% of packet flower seeds are dead, with the figure around 40% for vegetables.

They tested three types of flower seeds: delphinium, sweet pea and mimulus; and three types of vegetable seeds: lettuce, parsnip and spring onion.  Just one of the 15 seed companies met acceptable standards.  Dead seeds were found in every packet with the proportion ranging from just 4% to a whopping 99%.

We’ll have photocopies of the full article from the Daily Mail reporting the results at November’s Gardening Club meeting.  If you can’t wait until then you can read more on the Gardening Which website here.
