Fethiye Times ‘ Gardening Club – Annual Report 2008

Membership of the Club reached 61 by the end of the year with subscription being 10YTL for year or part-year and a 5YTL fee for non-members to attend any one meeting.

In 2008 we had 10 visitors to meetings so our popularity has really grown.

Pat Temiz was Chair, Stuart James Treasurer and Suzanne McCulloch Secretary.

The Club met on the first Wednesday of each month (with the exception of June, July and August) as follows:

January - AGM held at Shine Indian followed by viewing of second part of Eden project DVD.

February - Meeting at the Chamber of Agriculture where Devrim Bey, Agricultural Engineer, gave detailed instructions for care of fruit trees in winter.

March - Visit to a large Turkish-owned garden in Fethiye.

April - This meeting was actually held on final Wednesday in March as hosts, Brian and Doreen, were leaving for UK the next day.  They kindly loaned their garden for a demonstration of grafting techniques by a lecturer from the University’s Department of Landscaping.

May - Pat and Chris’ embryonic Islamic garden in Yaniklar.

September - Day trip to Roy and Caroline’s garden in Esen, near Patara followed by a visit to the Clos-Pinara vineyard.

October - Day trip to Ortaca and then the Palm Centre at Koycegiz where the owner gave everyone 10% off all plant purchases.

November - Talk by landscape designer Melis Duman entitled ‘Suitable Plants for Fethiye Gardens’ held at the Nil Bar, Calis.

December - Meeting at Shine Indian to unveil programme for Jan – May 2009 and watch first episode of Monty Don’s ‘Around the World in 80 Gardens’ in which he visited gardens in Mexico and Cuba.

In addition the annual Gardening Club Christmas Quiz was held on 17 December and, new for 2008, a social evening entitled ‘Festive Frolics’ took place on 19th December and raised 700YTL to help with treatment expenses of a young boy living in Arsakoy who has cancer.

This, the third full year of operation for the Club, was the most successful yet in terms of numbers of members.

The only disappointment was the lack of plant sales due to no longer having a suitable venue.  However this will be addressed in 2009 when a Bring and Buy Plant Sale has been built into the schedule of meetings.
