A fantastic book to help you identify that interesting plant you saw on your recent walk.
You’d have to be blind not to notice the huge array of plants growing wild here. Many of them only found as garden plants in the UK.
In fact there are almost 13,000 different species of wild flowers in Turkey, of which 3,000 are endemic.
And until 2005 there was no book to help you identify that interesting plant you saw on your recent walk.
In 2005 Dr. Erdoğan Tekin (a metallurgy expert with a love plants as his hobby) published the book with the red poppies on the cover shown below.
It catalogues 1000 wild plants with Turkish common name, Latin name and, wherever possible, English common name as well.
It is colour coded for ease of use and has all kinds of helpful information about where any particular plant is to be found.
All text is in Turkish and English.
The ISBN is 975-458-628-4 and it costs 70YTL.
Believe it or not that isn’t expensive for a reference book of this scope and quality.
Now Dr. Tekin has produced Volume II, with purple flowers on the cover.
The ISBN is 978-9944-88-117-3, it lists a further 700 plants and costs 45YTL.
In Fethiye the Natur bookshop (near Hayal Sinema and Ʃtlembik) will order either or both of these books for you.
The owners of the shop don’t speak much English but just write out the book details, including the ISBN number, and they will have it for you in a few days.
With Christmas just around the corner we shall say no more.
