Learning Turkish

Coming to a new country, it is good manners and generally beneficial to try and learn at least a bit of the language.

There are a number of options you can consider:

1. Contact FIG and enroll in one of their courses.  These are good value and will provide you will the basics as well as give you an opportunity to improve your pronounciation.

2. Enagage a private tutor.  Either on your own, or get together with one or two others.  This can make it more cost effective and you can learn at your own pace.  Make sure the person knows how to teach you in a structured way.

3. Books, tapes and home study.  These are variable and rely on your own self discipline.  I found the Routledge Colloquial Turkish to be very good.

4. Internet - there are a few resources if you look around.  This site has some good basic lessons, pronounciation, grammer and a Turkish dictionary - Turkish Class.com
Learn online - www.turkish-center.com allows you test your current level of knowledge and has multi media aids to learning.

5. Find a Turkish friend who wants to improve their English - there are a lot - and arrange for a regular session where you speak to them in Turkish and they correct you/help you and you do the same for their English.
