Getting About

Generally

Roads are of varying quality and range from fully surfaced main roads and motorways through to dirt tracks. Many roads pass through mountainous terrain so ice and snow can hamper progress in the winter months and falling rocks and landslides are common after rain. Other hazards include pot-holes, speed humps, quick changes in road surfaces where the road may have worn away, dips, bulges and varying grip levels. White line marking quickly disappears in the summer on heavily used roads as the tar melts. White line marking and signing is patchy on many local roads. Drivers should therefore be highly alert and not assume right of way.

Pavements are few and far between but the network is increasing as the area generally develops. The pavements are generally built on top of the road surface so the kerbs are around 2 feet high. This makes it difficult for the old, wheel chairs and people with push chairs to get on and off them. However, it does prevent all but the most ardent car driver from parking on them.

Walking

Watch out for scooters and bikes when walking on pavements and promenades of Fethiye and Calis as they like to use the pavements too. Pay particular attention when crossing roads. Car drivers generally don't expect pedestrians to dawdle across the road so won't slow down for you. Remember when you cross the road to stop, look and listen and keep looking and listening when you cross. You'd be surprised how many people don't look!! 

Also, just a quick word on pedestrian crossings.  They exist in Fethiye, although most are almost worn out.  Unlike in England where drivers have to stop, here hardly anyone takes any notice of them, so keep your wits about you.  Fethiye times understands that the Council do plan to do some work to improve the traffic system and will keep you up to date with developments as they are known.
