Fundraising lunch for Göcek strays

Last Sunday, members and friends of  Göcek Doğa ve Hayvan Dostları Derneği (Göcek Friends of the Environment and Animals) organised a fundraising lunch at Switch Göcek for the work they do for the stray animals of Göcek.

Around 60 members and friends gathered in the garden of Switch and enjoyed a wonderful buffet, followed by a raffle with an eclectic mix of prizes including copies of books by Kaptan June (June Haimoff) who was at the lunch.

More about Göcek Friends of the Environment and Animals

Since 1998, Göcek Friends of the Environment and Animals have rescued over 2000 dogs, had them neutered and vaccinated and rehomed them to carefully chosen families. They currently have approximately 190 dogs in their care that are too timid to be re-homed, very old, handicapped or just waiting to be adopted.

Back in 1998, land was relatively cheap in Göcek and local people let them use their land to build a refuge for the dogs. As Göcek developed, lands became very valuable and in August 2015 they were evicted and had to find a new place to build another shelter.

They were lucky enough to find a sponsor who helped to buy some land. With this donation and funds raised, they were able to build a new refuge. By the end of February 2016, the dogs had moved to the new shelter.

They also went into debt to build the shelter and have not yet finished paying for it.

The new shelter

There are currently over 190 dogs at the shelter.

Each one is taken to a clinic (the closest one is in Fethiye, 35 km away) to be checked, treated against parasites and sterilised if old enough. If the dog is ill or injured, it stays at the clinic until it is well enough to go to the shelter.

They are very lucky to have a dedicated team of vets in Fethiye however the vet bills are astronomical.

Food is a top priority and the dogs are fed on dry food with bread to avoid the risk of illness caused by wet food, or leftovers that are difficult to keep at a suitable temperature in the heat of the summer and quickly go off.

Where does the money come from?

Göcek Doğa ve Hayvan Dostları Derneği does not receive a subsidy from the government or from businesses and is funded by private donations. Without your help and generosity of donors, there is little they can do.
