Hopes High for Annual Event
The event was organised by George and Chris Rimmer of Calis.
“What started as a casual conversation just seven nights ago turned into a great event and one which we hope we can repeat again next year.
Chris said she was going to run 5 KM to support our daughter in law Dawn Ashton who was also doing a ‘Race for Life’ event in the UK on Sunday. I thought well why not get others involved and so here we are today.
After trying to establish some facts about Cancer rates in Turkey (and reliable figures seem hard to come by) what did become clear is that it is a disease that is on the increase, in fact just within the municipality of Fethiye, around 300 people who feel fit and healthy today will be diagnosed with cancer by this time next year, a frightening statistic in isolation yet more so if you take on board the words of the Turkish Ministry of Health who say “If nothing is done to overcome this problem, cancer rates will double within the next 15 years!
So today maybe we have started a process that will help stem that tide? Our hope being that we can run a much bigger event in Fethiye next year, early contact with the Belediye have been warmly received and discussions are under way with a number of business’s regarding sponsorship and donation processing, so watch this space I guess is the message.
If you would like to sponsor Dawn for her ‘Race for Life’ donations will be welcome here http://www.justgiving.com/dawnashton
