Whatever the season, there is always an abundance of fruit and vegetables in Fethiye’s everyday market. At this time of year there is masses of delicious produce, bursting with goodness and flavour, in the everyday market and much of it is grown locally.
Yes! We have some bananas!
We were delighted to see that Anamur’s tasty miniature bananas have arrived; an ideal size for an energising potassium-packed snack.
There are also heaps of figs, fresh and dried, mountains of melons, piles of avocados and crates of traditional flavourful tomatoes.
We also noticed that punnets of massive juicy blackberries are for sale, but these disappear quickly, so get there early.
All sorts of vegetables have been growing during the summer months, so this is a great time to buy garlic, salad stuffs and hot, spicy peppers.
Healthy, fresh goodness
Many of these can be enjoyed on their own, like honey for example, but they can also form the basis of many delicious main dishes, salads and deserts. They can also be used for making preserves, jams, and pickles, perfect with many Turkish sweetmeats and guaranteed to last long into the winter. Much of the produce can be frozen too and stored for later in the year.
A whole bunch of herbs
The market is also a great place to buy dried herbs, essential for any Turkish dish and also important for making tisanes (Turkish herb teas), all of which are considered to be full of health giving properties.
How fortunate we are in Fethiye to be surrounded by this amazing cornucopia!
